Travel Tips
Visas
Some countries require permits and/or visas for entry, re-entry, or departure which are issued by their embassies. It is recommended to contact issuing authorities beforehand in order to arrange for all the necessary permits and visas you may need. A valid passport is also needed for all international travel. It is an international requirement that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after returning from your trip.
Vaccinations
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following vaccines:
- Hepatitis A or immune globulin (IG)
- Hepatitis B
- Rabies
- Typhoid
- Booster doses for tetanus-diphtheria, measles, and polio
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry onto Zanzibar. See your doctor at least 4-6 weeks before your trip in order for the vaccines to take effect.
Malaria
If you are travelling to a malaria area use insect repellent on exposed skin (recommended repellents contain 20%-35% DEET). Malaria prophylaxis is also recommended. For your added protection, when the sun sets, change into long-sleeved clothing and pants if you will be outdoors. The British Airways Travel Clinic provides more information on protecting yourself against malaria at www.malaria.org.za.
