Travel Tips

seasons &    festivals

There are plenty of opportunities to learn of the island's fascinating culture with eccentric craft markets, Swahili Dhow adventures, and the infamous House of Wonders. Festivals are also a great way to learn about the traditions and excitement that Tanzania has to offer. The following are a few popular festivals:

Sauti za Busara
This popular music festival was named most fittingly. The festival title means "sounds of wisdom." It features ngoma dancers, bongo flava stars, taarab, and hip hop. In February, many people migrate to Stone Town's Old Fort to enjoy this festival.

Eid al Fitr (the post-Ramadhan Festival)
One of the most festive times on the isles, this is a celebration of lavish feasts and festivities.

Zanzibar International Film Festival
The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) promotes unique cultures represented across Tanzania. The festival usually takes place in July and is one of the largest and most varied international film programs.

Mwaka Kogwa (the Persian New Year)
Celebrated in the village of Makunduchi, this festival is celebrated with tradition, rituals, and fun. Men play flight with banana stems and women dress up and sing songs about family, life, and love. After the ritual burning of a hut, which is believed to represent the passing of an old year and the start of the new, the celebration lasts until dawn with fire, fighting, song, dance, drumming, and food. All are welcome at this traditional celebration of culture during the last week of July.
