Zanzibar and Tanzania info

zanzibar   island

Zanzibar is home to some of the world's most pristine beaches. With crystal clear waters, the territory boasts of white sand beaches, palm trees, and profound history and culture. It is also the foundation and driving force behind our company, as it provides the landscape for Everlast Tours.

Zanzibar's approximate population is 1,000,000, with Zanzibar City holding the largest inhabitance with 100,000 people. Zanzibar was always believed to have held connections with southern Arabia. It is very clear that this belief holds true, as many of Zanzibar's influences are derived from Arab structure. Taarab, for example, is the prevalent, indigenous music of Zanzibar. The word taarab is Arabic and means "joy, pleasure, and entertainment brought about by an artistic combination of lyrics, poems, and music."

Make sure you understand the value of the exchange rates when making purchases with the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) where 1 USD is approximately 1,000 TZS (click here for current exchange rates). The shopping opportunities are abundant though much of your TZS will most likely be spent on Zanzibar's mouthwatering, authentic cuisine like Pilau (Rice cooked with aromatic spices and served with pieces of fried fish or chicken), or Samaki/Kuku wa kupaka (fish and chicken in a coconut curry sauce).

Zanzibaris speak Swahili, or Kiswahili as it is known locally.
